That special time of the year we wait anxiously for is finally here — it’s Ramadan! And in the northern hemisphere, it’s also summer, which translates to really long days of going without food or drink (not even water!). Since even mild dehydration can lead to headaches, poor concentration, fatigue, and moodiness, staying hydrated is of utmost importance.
In our family, one of our favorite fruits also happens to be one of the best at replenishing lost fluids: watermelon! Since watermelon is about 91 percent water, it can quickly relieve thirst. Plus, it contains significant levels of vitamins A, B6 and C, antioxidants and amino acids. It even contains a modest amount of potassium which can help to ease muscle soreness, lower heart rates, improve artery function and lower blood pressure. Watermelon’s significant amount of lycopene (one cup contains 1.5 times more than what’s found in a large fresh tomato) acts as an antioxidant which helps to stop free radicals from damaging your cells and impacting your immune system, and helps to fight heart disease and several types of cancer. Something this yummy that’s also good for you? SCORE!
With Ramadan and summer coinciding, there’s nothing like biting into a fresh piece of watermelon at iftar time. Although my kiddos can go through an enormous watermelon in one sitting — plain ol’ slices or cubes — I tend to get bored easily so I’m always trying to think of new ways to work watermelon into more exciting recipes. Which brings me to this roundup of eleven delicious AND REFRESHING watermelon recipes that are great for any time of the year — but especially for iftar! The aguas frescas are one of my favorites, as are the various salads. In fact, I often take the salads to iftars, picnics, and potlucks. YUM!
