It doesn’t matter where you stand on the subject of moonsighting or calculation — we all await the arrival of that first evening with anticipation and longing. Longing for Ramadan days spent going hurriedly through our normal routines and obligations, while being reminded to pause and reflect on those who aren’t able to quench their thirst or satisfy their hunger with the ease that we can. Longing for Ramadan nights spent in grateful worship for our many blessings, the Grace with which God touches our lives everyday.
It can be challenging to impart that spirituality to our kiddos when they’re young. Sure, they can go through the motions and rituals we teach them. But how do we share the awe, the wonder, the humility of those amazing days and nights that we so fiercely cling to?
One way is to create an air of excitement as Ramadan approaches. Over the years, I’ve seen tons of calendars that count the days *of* Ramadan, but rarely (if ever?) a calendar that counts the days *until* Ramadan. Yet, that’s the perfect way to add to the elation that builds as the days between now and the arrival of Ramadan become fewer and fewer.
Enter our family’s totally new (and now favorite!) way to count down to Ramadan: a set of interchangeable blocks handmade by my dear friend Hafsa over at Hafsa Creates. You can tell she totally used my favorite colors to make our blocks, right? Yeah, ‘cuz Hafsa’s a rock star and she specializes in customizing her works of art! From our youngest (7yo) to our oldest (17yo), all of our kiddos take turns changing the countdown daily. I think it’s something to do with a) how pretty it is and b) how interactive & touch-feely it is.
Wanna know the absolute best part of our new calendar?
When we’re ready to count down the days ’til Eid, this calendar can do that!
Are you or a family member headed to Hajj? Those left behind can count the days *of* Hajj, while learning about and recreating the acts of worship that correspond to each day!
And then, when Eid al-Adha has come and gone, we get to start all over again . . .
::sigh:: Ramadan hasn’t begun yet, but I’m already dreading its end.
So now you know the secret — the set comes with three number blocks, each with six digits, one per side. Another block can be flipped to say, “Days Until” or “Days Of.” And a third block shows, “Ramadan,” “Eid,” or “Hajj,” depending on how you rotate it. Nifty, eh? You’ll never need another calendar again. Like, ever.
